In 2021, Nigeria's millet production was estimated at two million metric tonnes. However, between 2005 and 2021, millet production in the country saw a significant decline. The most notable decrease occurred in 2011, when production plummeted by 75% compared to 2010, dropping from 5.2 million metric tonnes to just 1.3 million metric tonnes—a difference of 3.9 million metric tonnes. Millet is a crucial crop in many parts of the world, particularly in Africa (including Mali, Nigeria, and Niger) and Asia's semiarid tropics, notably in India and China. In fact, 97% of the world’s millet production occurs in developing countries, where it plays a vital role in food security and livelihoods. Globally, millet production reached 30.5 million metric tonnes in 2020, with India leading the way, contributing 41% of the total global production. Niger also emerged as a significant producer of millet during this period.
